Key takeaway: There's no current federal answer to whether Hallandale Beach is safe: the FBI's Crime Data Explorer has the city's figures only through 2020, when it recorded 498 violent and 2,625 property offenses per 100,000 residents, above the Florida and US rates that year. Those rates divide crimes involving beachgoers, racetrack and casino visitors by a resident count of about 41,700, so use the police department's crime map for the exact blocks you're considering and decide street by street.
Who this guide is for: You're thinking about buying or renting a condo or house in Hallandale Beach, often from out of town, and want the safety data, the location and the commute laid out before you pick a side of town.

Is living in Hallandale Beach safe? What the Crime Data Shows
The FBI's newest crime figures for Hallandale Beach are from 2020. Florida's police agencies changed how they report crime after that year, and the FBI's Crime Data Explorer shows no Hallandale Beach Police Department figures for 2021 through 2024. Anyone quoting a newer "crime rate" for the city is using an estimate or the department's own reports, so ask which.
Hallandale Beach Crime Rate in the FBI data
In 2020 the department reported 200 violent offenses and 1,054 property offenses to the FBI. Per 100,000 residents that's 498.1 violent and 2,625.0 property offenses, against Florida's 383.9 and 1,775.6 and the US 399.3 and 1,955.3. In 2019 the city's figures were 178 violent and 1,245 property offenses.
| Offenses per 100,000 people | Hallandale Beach 2019 | Hallandale Beach 2020 | Florida 2020 | United States 2020 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Violent | 441.7 | 498.1 | 383.9 | 399.3 |
| Property | 3,089.6 | 2,625.0 | 1,775.6 | 1,955.3 |
| Offenses reported (violent / property) | 178 / 1,245 | 200 / 1,054 |
How to read a per-resident crime rate in a Beach City
A crime rate divides every offense the police record by the number of residents. Hallandale Beach has a public beach open 365 days a year and Gulfstream Park, a thoroughbred racetrack and casino, so offenses involving visitors land in the numerator while visitors never appear in the denominator. That doesn't make the numbers wrong. It means the city-wide rate tells you little about the street you'd live on, which is the question you're asking.
Beach safety in Hallandale Beach
The other safety question people search is about the water. The city's Beach Safety Division staffs the municipal beach with lifeguards certified as open water lifeguards by the United States Lifesaving Agency, and the beach is open 365 days a year. Swim near a staffed tower, and call Beach Safety at (954) 362-9198 for that day's conditions; the division posts yearly statistical overviews on its Beach Safety page. Beach wheelchairs are lent free at Towers 1 and 2, first come, first served.
What changed after 2020 in the Crime Reporting
The gap after 2020 is a reporting change, not a sign that crime stopped being counted. The FBI's own coverage figures show only about half of Florida's population was covered by reporting agencies in 2021, and roughly 81% to 87% in 2022 to 2024, and Hallandale Beach is one of the agencies missing from those later years. When a website shows a Hallandale Beach crime grade for 2024 or 2025, it's modeled from partial data, so give it less weight than the department's own map.
How to Check the Blocks You're Considering
The police department publishes a LexisNexis Community Crime Map and monthly and annual reports on its Crime Statistics & Map page. Search the building's or house's address, set the date range to the last 12 months, and compare the incident types (vehicle break-ins and thefts read differently from assaults) with the next address on your list. For questions, the non-emergency line is (954) 764-4357.
Two parts of the city add their own security layer, paid through a separate tax district. Golden Isles has one gated entrance with license plate readers, a guardhouse with contracted guards and off-duty police patrols from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Three Islands has two automatic gates and license plate readers. Both are compared in the guide to Hallandale Beach neighborhoods.
Where is Hallandale Beach, Florida?
Hallandale Beach sits at the southern end of Broward County, just south of Hollywood, on the stretch of coast Visit Lauderdale calls Greater Fort Lauderdale. Its addresses use ZIP code 33009. The city's own marina describes itself as the most southern dockage in Broward County, which tells you how close the county line is.
What County is Hallandale Beach in?
Broward. That decides your property tax bill, your school district and your tourist tax if you rent a unit out short term. Taxes are covered in the Broward County property tax guide.
Is Hallandale Beach part of Miami?
No. It's its own city in Broward County, not Miami-Dade. It does share transit with Miami-Dade: the city's regional transit page lists both Broward County Transit and Miami-Dade Transit buses.
Living in Hallandale Beach: Ocean, Intracoastal or Inland
The city splits into three kinds of address, and each has its own costs and trade-offs. US-1 (Federal Highway, where City Hall sits at 400 S Federal Highway) and the Intracoastal Waterway are the lines that matter most.
Oceanfront condos on South Ocean Drive
Most of the city's condos are high-rises along South Ocean Drive (A1A), on the ocean side or across the road on the Intracoastal. Records put the older towers there in the 1970s and a newer group, such as Beach Club, at 2005 to 2007. Building age drives inspections, assessments and loan options, so compare them in the building-by-building look at the oceanfront towers.
The Intracoastal islands: Golden Isles and Three Islands
Golden Isles is about 340 acres of finger islands off the Intracoastal with 340 single-family houses, four condo and co-op buildings and a city park. Three Islands is about 190 acres with roughly 330 townhomes and 36 condo buildings. Both are residential, gated at the entrance and on public roads. Each is also a special taxing district: Golden Isles levied 1.0934 mills and Three Islands 0.66 mills in fiscal 2024, and Three Islands owners are paying a five-year special assessment for about $3.5 million of a $5.43 million gate, road and traffic-calming project approved on June 18, 2025. Add those to the price when you compare. Listings are on Julia's Golden Isles and Three Islands pages.
Inland Hallandale Beach near the City Parks
West of the water, the city's parks do much of the work: Peter Bluesten Park has a turf soccer field, three baseball fields and the YMCA, OB Johnson Park has a gym and multipurpose field, and BF James Park has a pool open year-round. Houses here are the other part of the single-family and townhome market. A day-by-day list of places is in things to do in Hallandale Beach.
Living in Hallandale Beach and commuting to Miami or Fort Lauderdale
Driving from Hallandale Beach on I-95
Hallandale Beach Boulevard is I-95 exit 18, the city's main route to Miami to the south and Fort Lauderdale and its airport to the north. Drive times swing widely between rush hour and midday, and there's no official figure worth quoting, so time the trip you'd make at the hour you'd make it before you commit to an address.
Brightline and Tri-Rail from Hallandale Beach
The city lists Brightline for train trips to Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. The nearest Tri-Rail commuter stop is Hollywood Station, which the city's free Cloud shuttle Route 3 reaches.
The Cloud shuttle and County Buses
The Cloud is a free, all-electric shuttle on four routes. Routes 1 to 3 run Monday to Saturday from about 7 a.m.; Route 4 runs daily. It stops only at designated stops and links to Broward County Transit routes. If you'd rather not drive to the beach, it's also a way around the city's beach parking meters, which are enforced with license plate recognition and carry a $50 minimum fine.
Schools for a Hallandale Beach address: How to Check
Public schools are run by Broward County Public Schools, and assignment goes by address and changes with boundary updates. Enter the exact address in the district's Find My School locator, pick the school year, and it returns the assigned elementary, middle and high schools. If an address isn't found, the district answers at [email protected]. Check this yourself for every address on your shortlist rather than relying on a listing description, since a listing can be out of date the year a boundary moves.
The city's school history is older than Broward County itself. The Historic Hallandale Schoolhouse at 648 NW 2nd Street was built in 1910 and is the oldest building in Broward known to have been built as a schoolhouse; volunteers rebuilt it with lumber from the Dade County School Board after a hurricane, five years before Broward was formed in 1915.
Living in Hallandale Beach: Flooding, Traffic rules and Costs
King Tides and Flood Zones in Hallandale Beach
The city warned of higher-than-normal tides through October 2026, with street flooding possible in low-lying areas even on sunny days. Before you buy, look up the address on the city's flood map and property search for the flood zone, base flood elevation and any elevation certificate on file. The city notes that federal flood policies cover up to $250,000 for the structure and $100,000 for contents. Condo coverage is explained in our guide to Florida condo insurance.
School-zone Cameras and the 25 mph limit
Since September 15, 2025, two-lane local residential streets have a 25 mph limit unless posted otherwise. School-zone speed cameras at five locations start issuing $100 violations on October 22, 2026, at 11 mph or more over the posted limit; the city counted 11,490 drivers more than 10 mph over in five school days before the program.

Typical rent was $2,455 a month. Price trends by side and age are in the Hallandale Beach housing market report.

- What will the association and district charge? Ask for the condo or HOA budget, any special assessment, and whether the address is in the Golden Isles or Three Islands taxing district.
- How will you get to work? Time the I-95 drive at your hours, or map the Cloud and Brightline trip.
